What is GST?

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is an indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India since July 1, 2017 and it replaced multiple indirect taxes such as VAT, service tax, excise duty, etc.

GST was charged at different tax slabs in India depending on the nature of the supply, including:

  • 5%
  • 12%
  • 18%
  • 28%

In 2026, India’s GST structure is consolidated into a simplified system, primarily operating on three main slabs of-

  • 5%
  • 18%
  • 40%

In addition to the above, there are 0% (exempt) and special 3% rates that are applicable for specific items.

Key GST Slabs & Item-Wise Breakdown

  • 0% (Exempt): Applicable on milk, eggs, unbranded fresh groceries, life-saving drugs, and certain essential educational and healthcare services.
  • 3%: Special rates are applicable to gold, silver, and precious jewelry.
  • 5%: This rate is applicable on certain daily-use essentials, priority goods, and standard job work services.
  • 18% (Standard): This is the standard rate covering the majority of commonly used consumer products, electronics (mobiles, laptops, refrigerators), and professional services.
  • 40%: This is the highest tier applied exclusively to luxury and “sin” goods (e.g., premium cars, tobacco products, soft drinks).

Depending on the nature of the supply, GST can be classified as the following:

  • Integrated Goods and Services Tax (IGST).
  • Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST).
  • State Goods and Services Tax (SGST).
